Presentation types

There are many ways to contribute to the Australasian Youth Justice Conference 2026, with all contributions needing to align with the Australasian Youth Justice Conference 2026 themes and aims. Further details of each type are outlined below. All submissions should be in reference to work currently underway or completed within the last 18 months.

All abstract submissions and registrations are managed via the Oxford Abstracts platform. Submitters must create an account before lodging a submission.

All presentations must be delivered in person. Online or pre-recorded presentation options are not available

Oral Presentation

Presentations should aim to engage the audience, to create interest, seek feedback and encourage further enquiry. Presentations are approximately 20-25 minute long conversation starters, followed by 5-10 minutes for further discussion/question time, for a total of 30 minutes. Presentations must reference work currently underway or completed within the last 18 months. A full paper is not required for submission.

In the abstract portal, presenters will be asked to provide:

  • Presentation title
  • Author(s) associated with the paper, and their affiliation.
  • A 100-word biography for each presenting author. Biographies are not required for non-presenting author
  • An abstract explaining the presentation content (250 words)
  • The primary theme

Presenting authors will also be asked to confirm that they are able to attend the conference, have received approval from all authors to present the work, and that they have read the conference terms and conditions.

Symposium

Symposia are made up of three to four papers with an overarching theme, and are chaired by the coordinating author. It is the chair’s

role to provide the overview, keep track of time during the session, and to invite the audience to ask questions after each paper or at the end of the session. Symposia are given approximately 60 minutes including discussion/question time.

There is a separate portal for Symposia. In the portal, the chair is required to provide:

  • The symposium title
  • An overview of the symposium (100 word limit)
  • Symposium theme (chosen from the list of themes for the conference)

After submitting the symposium title, overview and theme, the chair will be prompted to enter the email addresses of the contributing author(s). Each author will receive an automated email inviting them to submit their individual paper to the linked symposium.

If a paper has already been submitted and you wish to include it within a symposium, please contact the conference administrators at ayjc2026@swin.edu.au to have the submission linked.

Panel Discussion

Panel discussions aim to stimulate discussion about a youth justice issue/matter/innovation by a panel of experts, academics, practitioners and/or community representatives involved in the field. Panel sessions can be between 45-60 minutes in total, including question time. The Panel facilitation is the responsibility of the Panel.

Workshop

Attendees at previous Conferences have told us they would like more chances to work collaboratively with other attendees. We are also looking for proposals to run facilitated workshops that explore, in a participatory manner, any of the nine sub-themes. Sessions can be between 60-120 minutes in total, including discussion and question time. Please include:

  • a clear statement on how your proposed workshop will contribute to strengthening the voices and activities of young people, their families and communities in the youth justice context
  • proposed methodology and maximum number of participants
  • Ensure you describe who will be involved in leading and facilitating the workshop. For the purposes of submitting the proposal in the abstract portal, the facilitator/s should be listed in the 'Author' field.
